Powerful prior coverage

It´s worthwhile insisting: one of the strong points of Spanish newspapers is the prior coverage.  Preparing the “incident” also enables approaching topics from different perspectives. We are featuring recent examples from La Verdad, El Correo and Las Provincias. The way of telling the honoris causa doctorate given to Antonio López is based on the great interview; the next European elections, by gathering together eighteen young people aged 18; the great graphic display is the best option for a qualifying round from the “Copa del Rey” (“The King´s Cup”) Championship or for a soccer match from the Spanish League; and the report, to announce that George Clooney is arriving in the city:

Moving away

We have seen two good reports with similar topics: trends. The first one, from La Rioja, approaches the issue about families that leave the city to live in the countryside. The second one, from El Correo, gives information about families that are leaving the surrounding areas to go and live… in the city.

City councillors who live far way

A few posts ago we stopped at “the previous coverage”. Today we do so with “the day after” and with examples from Heraldo, El Correo, La Voz de Galicia and Diario de Burgos.  In the first one, the discovery of a historical document leads to publishing first, reactions, and, later, a report.  The second one, the passing away of a sailor reveals who he was. In the third one, the decision of a city councillor leads to discovering that it is not the only case and to talking to him. In the last one, a cyclist´s accident in the city is used to analyze the lanes for cyclists and pedestrians:

Local perspectives

Locating is always a winning formula, even more so in a regional newspaper.  It means keeping  in mind people and realities that are close to the reader. We have found three good examples. The first one, from Diario de Navarra, where local chefs discuss a well-known TV program. The second one, from La Rioja, talks about local people reprieved as a result of a reprieve which had  repercussions in the media. The third one, from Diari de Tarragona, focuses on the local first ladies after the “Hollande case”:

Tragedy in Ceuta

The work done by small editorial departments is always admirable, but even more when something unexpected and very relevant happens. El Faro de Ceuta experienced one of those situations last week: nine people —the number would increase up to 14 people later— died trying to reach Spain from Morocco. This was their coverage:

Parents and children

Two interesting topics on the same day. Parents who are not too exemplary. And children who are not too exemplary, too. Two worrying trends in El Correo.  To read. To think about.

Midas the chef

Wherever they are, whatever they do. Newspapers bet on local people who interest readers. We have seen a double look at Ferran Adrià in El Periódico: the first one talks about his exhibition in New York ; the second one narrates what The Bulli Fundation is going to be like in Catalonia
