First step: to find something interesting. Usually, thanks to reports, interesting things are based on big data. We must know how to work with them and show them. If we do it, we are doing good journalism. But... sometimes good facts give coldness, they make interesting things less attractive. That´s were people come in. To tell stories, to show faces. We´ve seen various examples in Las Provincias:

Ruins in the Way of Saint James
Medina del Campo. Simón Ruiz Hospital. Built in the XVII Century. It´s derelict and falling to pieces, but many years ago it was an important building in the city and relevant to all the pilgrims that were travelling from the south of the country to Santiago. Citizens want to restore the chapel. We read the story in El Norte de Castilla:

To the editorial office, on a motorcycle
We have seen many pages in which the interviewee goes to the editorial department. The last ones, in Diario de Noticias de Álava. The "guest" was Jordi Tarrés, seven times Trials World Champion. The article reviews the great professional career from this Trials´ legend. And it has a "plus": Tarrés accepted the challenge set out by the newspaper. To access the editorial department with the motorcycle he used to win his first World Championship in 1987. The champion accomplished the challenge by far. Anyway, he admited that some stretches "could definitely count towards in a World Championship"

Let culture shine
We like to show good cultural pages, to show beauty it´s not only in sports sections. To demonstrate that there are excellent pieces of information that come from scheduled acts. We have seen two excellent recent examples in La Vanguardia:

With Nahir, one year later
To understand that today´s example from La Voz de Galicia is awesome, is necessary to read the entry (in Spanish) that we published the 26th of June, 2013. Once you read it, today´s page completely makes sense. Outstanding:
Closing stories is a synonym of good Journalism. This piece of information from Diario de Navarra is also excellent:

Do you play?
In a newspaper there´s room for everything: great analysis, good chronicles... And also, there is space to invite the reader to play. Las Provincias has done it. Do you dare to try connecting personages and anecdotes?

Joaquín Salvador Lavado
When it was announced the 21st of May, everyone was happy to know it. Joaquín Salvador Lavado, Quino, won the award " Príncipe de Asturias de Comunicación y Humanidades" (Prince of Asturias Award of Communication and Humanities). As it was expected, some newspapers published the story with special care. For example El Comercio, in addition to a good coverage, had a gesture to it in the front-page.
In El País we saw two beautiful details. One from Forges and another from Sciammarella.
We also loved how Clarín published the story:
And we ere pleased to read the story in El Mundo, El Correo and El Periódico:
As it was expected, many Argentinian newspapersput the story into their front pages, as they show these ones from Tiempo and El Territorio:

About triples...
Good theme, excellent information... and thinking about how to put it on page. That´s the key from many opening pages from Las Provincias We have saved various "triples" to see the visual variety.
And with these two from Diario de Burgos:

The magic of number 10
We are not going to talk about Messi. The number 10 is an attractive number when having to narrate information, and helps for a better design. We have seen two examples in La Vanguardia and El Mundo.

Neighbourhood´s requests
Streets and telephone. Those two words have marked the professional activity of thousands of journalists throughout history. In this blog we usually show a lot of examples “from the streets”. Today there is one, from La Voz de Galicia in which the key point is “using the phone”. Dozens of calls until completing the chart.

Soccer´s stories
Son muy distintas, pero leímos las dos con interés. La Verdad publicó un reportaje sobre, dicen, una de las camisetas más feas del mundo; y El Periódico, otro sobre, dicen, el partido más sangriento que se puede ver hoy.
They are very different, but we have read both with interest. La Verdad published a report about, it is said, one of the ugliests t-shirts in the world; and El Periódico, another one about, it is said, the most bloody match that can be watched nowadays.

Madrid, Madrid, Madrid
When there is affection, readers notice it. The affection of a team, of the journalist for the text, or the one the designer has when expressing the information on the page. Being in a hurry is not the important thing. The essence is doing it well. These pages from El Mundo are a great example:

Parents and children
Two interesting topics on the same day. Parents who are not too exemplary. And children who are not too exemplary, too. Two worrying trends in El Correo. To read. To think about.

Following the wild goat
Yesterday we saw how two journalists “wore out shoe soles” in a big motorcycle gathering. In this post we show how Antonio Armero, from Hoy, also did so. He accompanied one of the guards from La Sierra´s Regional Hunting Reserve for nine hours. Outstanding report.

Página 2
“There are many newspapers that attempt to launch the day´s stories with an opinion section, one that is more or less fixed, that puts the reader in front of everything he will find inside. Quite frequently routine and standard stories turn readers off. In Heraldo we considered a “Página 2” (second page) with an informative and opinion-based tone which encompasses the newspaper´s most representative stories from the Heraldo staff´s perspective. Actually, we are talking about the most-commented topics when deciding the day´s stories, and that are narrated in an original way without always using the same tools.”
"The use of monochrome, as well, emphasizes the importance of opinion over other graphic elements but always transmitting a desire to innovate and surprise. It becomes a small challenge that is overcome in the morning planning session (it is also the object of change depending on the flow of news), although always sustained by what we consider to be valid concentrating the most significant stories of the day. A short, but measured, look at a reality that has a transversal nature (local, sports, national, etc.). It is a product of journalism that, we believe, anchors the reader and also adds value to the newspaper from the start."
This is what Mikel Iturbe, the newspaper´s director, has told us about your interesting “Página 2”. Lets look at some pages:
