Variety

We title this entry as "variety" because that´s the link between the examples we´re showing today. Different, but all very accurate ways of telling. Ideal  shows the traffic jams in Granada with an excellent photo gallery:

El Periódico approaches the match between Real Madrid and Barcelona with the player that has played it more times. Xavi writes the captions:

Diario de Navarra informs about the new driving test exam using facts and... testing the readers´ knowledge:

Las Provincias the trips made by a city council with some simple but conclusive maps:

La Vanguardia tells, thanks to the readers´ collaboration, the story of the first car that was registered in Barcelona:

And El Diario Vasco  faces "the day after" the death of two surfers speaking with experts. Outstanding link between title and picture.

Better if it´s seen

Many times the reader needs to "see" the essence of information. If it was only narrated through the text, we would miss the story´s soul. These three examples from  El Correo and La Vanguardia are excellent. We can see the design of a new town square. We can see the face of a pedophile wanted by the police. We can see how to do some excercises. Outstanding.

11 of September, 1714

300 years ago, Barcelona, after several months of siege, surrendered at Bourbon troops. La Vanguardia and El Periódico have published two excellent infographics that remember how the siege was.

Pampering a symbol

Gernika´s tree is 28 years old and Kepa Txaterina takes care of it. Excellent information in El Correo.

Worked design

Las Provincias keeps providing good examples of crafted design, a design which keeps information in mind. We show various recent pages:

What we need to know

We like to find pages like these from Heraldo. Facing facts that begin to mess up, the Journalist —in this case, José Miguel Tafalla— takes time to think about it and to expose the key points. These ideas can be narrated using items or, like in this example, by using the effective formula of questions and answers.

It´s not magic, just thinking about

It´s always a pleasure to find pages in which desing walks hand in hand with information. The visual wink made by Las Provincias it´s a good example. It´s not magic or a chance result. It´s what happens when you take more time to think about the information´s put into page.

Very complete double-page

Great information in El Diario Vasco. Appropriate theme for the summer. There´s information, accident prevention, general facts, an infographics and there is also a self-improvement story.

A drop of blood

Simple but extraordinary page from El Correo. The story of how, three years later, a murderer  was arrested. Good text and fantastic chart about the process.

An opportunity to shine

There is always a chance to take steps forward when the word "process" is the essence of information. These are excellent occasions to tell things in a different way, in a clear, nice, way. we have seen good examples in  El Correo, Las Provincias and  La Vanguardia:

Working over the image

We like to find different ways of telling. Well-thought, efficient ways. This piece of information from Las Provincias is a good example. The image becomes the essence of the analysis.

Remembering Tito

We saw yesterday how effective is for the reader to "see" facts. Today, in the example from  El Periódico, the est way of telling is text. When its good, just as it happens with this article, the extension is not important because it is read until the end.

How it was, how it will be.

I've seen two good examples of ways of telling the past (Las Provincias) and the future (El Correo). Both are based on  "showing" the essence of information .

Keys and steps

We like, for their effectiveness, the ways of telling that take a step forward. They are strategies that, above all, highlight the key points from a story, from a process... We have seen three good examples in El Mundo, Las Provincias and 20minutos.

Much more in less space

One of the biggest advantages infographics have over text is that they allow us to give much more information in the same space. The three cases we are showing are good examples. They are from the Colombian newspaper El Espectador, from La Vanguardia and from El Periódico.

The great coalition

The great —and very necessary— coalition refers to two essential words in Journalism: information and design. Once it is produced, the result is immediate, convincing... Magical. The pages from EM2 from El Mundo are, almost always, a good example. Let´s see some recent ones:

We all want more

More attempts at taking the risk of narrating using other formulas. An extraordinary one is comics. When reading newspapers, sometimes we find information that talks about someone (an author, an institution…) who has written a book, a guide… using comics to tell something. We have recently seen it in El Mundo:

If others do it to communicate better, why don´t newspapers encourage themselves to try it more? We show two recent pages, from Diario de Burgos and Marca.

Strategies to tell

Every story can be approached in many different ways. When the reader notices that there is a journalist that has thought about it and the design well-accompanies the text, mission archieved. We think that these two examples from El Mundo are interesting. The first one, to bet on the "test" highlights the topic. In the second one, the effort to stop and think about some key-words makes the message efficent. We saw a similar case in El Periódico.

The newspaper which asks the most

Sin duda, en España es La Voz de Galicia. Se trata de un interesante y muy claro modo de contar las cosas. Útil en todas las secciones. Exige más al periodista, pero así se sirve mejor al lector.
